Join Brownie Girl Scouts and earn the Bugs Badge!
STEMs Grow will be leading Girl Scouts in a fun filled program that will allow girls to explore the world of bugs while learning about the Monarch Butterfly!
After the butterfly life cycle lesson, Girl Scouts will begin the process of growing their own milkweed plant (see materials list below). They will learn how to 'prep' the seeds for growth through a process called "cold stratification", followed by planting of the seeds. Girls can then go on to plant and grow milkweed, attracting their own Monarch caterpillars and butterflies!
Materials that will need to be purchased prior to this program include:
- Milkweed Seeds
- Peat Pellets
- Origami paper
Additional materials needed:
- Paper towels (2)
- Ziploc bag
Optional materials for the serious gardener/butterfly enthusiast wanting to grow a more complete butterfly garden
- Milkweed & Pollinator Seeds
- Garden Soil
Materials can be purchased at your local garden center or online. Please reach out to lhatlee@girlscoutsccc.org if you would like links provided for online shopping.
